Helicopter Controls every pilot should know before flying

When we drive a car, there are some basic controls which we have to learn and implement while on road. This include accelerator, clutch, brakes and steering wheel. Except these all other controls and functions we can count as secondary. Similarly, while flying a helicopter there are some basic controls which every pilot must know.

Fundamental Helicopter Controls Every Pilot Must Know

When it comes to flying a helicopter, the awareness is the key. There is a lot of controls which you have to manage simultaneously, but few of them are the basic ones which every pilot must know. I have briefly discussed these below.

1. The Cyclic Control

In most helicopters, the cyclic control is located between the legs of pilot. It is commonly known as “cyclic stick”. The cyclic is similar to a joystick. However, in a few small helicopters like Robinson series, there is a unique T-bar cyclic control system. A few helicopters have cyclic controls that descend into the cockpit from overhead while others use side cyclic controls.

This helicopter control is called the cyclic because it can vary the pitch or angle of the rotor blades throughout each revolution of the main rotor system (i.e. through each cycle of rotation) to develop unequal lift (thrust). The result is to tilt the rotor disk in a particular direction, which results in the helicopter moving in that direction.

If the pilot pushes the cyclic forward, the rotor disk tilts forward, and the rotor produces a thrust in the forward direction. If the pilot pushes the cyclic to the side, the rotor disk tilts to that side and produces thrust in that direction, causing the helicopter to hover sideways.

2. The Collective Pitch Control

The collective pitch control, or collective, is usually located on the left side of the pilot’s seat. It has a pilot-selected variable friction control to prevent unintentional movement.

The collective changes the pitch angle of all the main rotor blades at the same time or collectively and independently of their positions. Therefore, the angle in all the blades change equally on applying collective input. This results in increasing or decreasing total lift or thrust.

3. Anti-Torque Pedals

This helicopter control makes the helicopter rotate in whatever direction it wants to. These are located in the same position as the rudder-pedals in a fixed-wing aircraft and serve a similar purpose, namely to control the direction in which the nose of the aircraft is pointed.

This is one of the most important helicopter controls which plays a major role while changing the direction of the helicopter during flight.

Application of the pedal in a given direction changes the pitch angle of the tail rotor blades, which increase or decrease the thrust produced by the tail rotor, causing the nose of helicopter to yaw in the direction of the applied pedal.

4. Throttle

Throttle is similar to the accelerator of a car. The RPM is an important parameter while flying a helicopter. The rotor blades of a helicopter operates at a specific rpm. The throttle controls the RPM or the power produced by the engine. The transmission connects the engine and the main rotor.

The purpose of the throttle is to maintain enough engine power to keep the rotor rpm within allowable limits to produce enough lift for flight.

In single-engine helicopters, the throttle control is typically a twist grip mounted on the collective control, but it can also be a lever mechanism in fully governed systems. Multi-engine helicopters generally have a power lever or mode switch for each engine.

How are the Russian Aircraft Superior to the US Aircraft?

The United States Air Force is by far the most superior air force across the globe. But what makes it the strongest? To start with, USAF has over 13,264 aircraft with more than 462,000 workers!

Surprisingly USAF is three times larger than the Russian Air Force, the second most superior air force globally. Russian Air Force has around 4,163 military aircraft and about 148,000 trained personnel. However, even with the enormous marginal difference, Russian military aircraft still commands power over some of America’s military aircraft.

You are probably wondering, “How can Russian Military Aircraft be superior to the US Airforce military aircraft?”

Well, let’s find out.

Russian Airforce vs. US Air Force Ideology

Before we get to how Russian Military Aircraft is superior to the US, it is imperative to understand the military ideologies between these two superpowers.

Russia’s main military focus is defense. Towards the end of World War II, Russia established satellite stations in Eastern Europe to protect itself from possible ground attacks. In this regard, Russia focused more on defending its grounds and military aircraft rather than attacking. Their ground stations control the actions pilots take in their military aircraft.

More so, rather than relying on military aircraft or Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), Russia relies on ground-based radar stations to detect their enemies. Why this reversed approach? Simple, it’s easier and cheaper to repair or replace radar stations compared to AWACS or military aircraft.

On the other side, the US’s main ideology is powerful military machines. Currently, their main focus during military aircraft production is stealth. Stealth aircraft focuses on being invisible from the enemy’s radar, attacking, then flying away before the enemy has a chance to attack.

For instance, the F-22 can get into a war zone, fire a long-range missile, then stealthily and swiftly get out. However, that doesn’t mean that enemy aircraft can’t shoot stealthy airliners down.

The US does not rely on ground-based radar stations but instead focuses on technology that enables them to detect enemy aircraft even at BVR, i.e., Beyond Visual Range. Thus, their aircraft have more complex and advanced communication devices, data links, and radars than Russia’s aircraft.

Having gone through the different military ideologies between Russia and the US, it’s time to dive into the differences between their military aircraft.

Strength

Russia has more powerful helicopters than the US when it comes to military helicopters. The Russian Mil Mi-26, the current heaviest lifting helicopter globally, is at the top of the list.

The Mi-26 or Halo is a twin-turbine helicopter designed by Russian Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant. Halo weighs about 7 tonnes and can carry up to 4,000 kg of external cargo.

Service and Maintenance

Russian military aircraft are not highly-budgeted and advanced as the USAF military aircraft. Therefore, they can be serviced easily and quickly in the field without being taken to specialists in a specialist facility.

For instance, the Saturn AL-31 engine– a military turbofan engine that powers the Su-27 derivatives of Russia- can run for 1500 hours without overhauling. Further, with only a cost of $3.5 million, it makes it cheap to service and maintain.

This ease in servicing and maintaining the military aircraft of Russia makes them more superior since on a battlefield, they can run longer, be serviced quickly, and get back to business!

Rough Field Performance  

Since airfields are among the most targeted areas during a war, the Soviets built aircraft capable of landing or taking off in dispersed airfields like gravel runways or highways. To be more specific, let’s look at the MiG 29 features geared towards this rough field performance.

The MiG 29 aircraft has blocked inlets to let the supplementary air intakes mounted on the upper surface to supply air into the engines.

Secondly, the Russian military aircraft are built to withstand the harsh climatic condition of their homeland. Therefore, the aircraft is constructed toughly to survive adverse meteorological conditions that USAF aircraft cannot operate in.

Maneuverability

Russian Military aircraft offer highly advanced maneuverability and stunts that most US aircraft cannot. For instance, the Su-27 and its derivatives can perform post-stall maneuvering. Some of these derivatives utilize 3d thrust vectoring, enabling the pilot to control the aircraft at all speeds.

One Russian aircraft with super maneuverability is the Su-35, which features 3D thrust vectoring nozzles, an advanced fly-by-wire flight control system, and powerful AL-41F1S engines. The Su-35 maneuvering capabilities went viral during the Marquee Air Show and Weapons Expo (called MAKS) in 2017.

It’s also good to give credits where they are due. Russia has produced one of the fastest fighter jets, which are still in service today. The MiG-25 Foxbat can reach Mach 3.2 speed, which equates to 2,190 mph.

 What’s Mach speed? This speed represents the speed of sound, which travels at 717 mph or 1195 kmh, a speed referred to as Mach 1.0.

Better Dogfighters

Since USAF military aircraft, especially jet fighters are expensive and are fitted with top-notch technology, they focus on long-range fights. They use advanced radar systems and Medium/Long-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (LRAAR) and (AMRAAM).

For example, the AIM-120 AMRAAM can shoot BVR regardless of the weather conditions or time of the day.

On the other hand, Russian aircraft, more specifically the current Russia’s superior fighter Su-35, is the best dogfighter. Su-35 has 12-14 weapons hardpoints, more than F-15C and F-22 eight weapons hardpoints. Besides the K-77M radar-guided missiles and R-74 infrared-guided missiles, the Su-35 has a 30mm cannon fitted with 150 rounds for dogfighting. Additionally, this fighter can mount up to 17,000 pounds of air-to-ground ammunition.

Additionally, the super maneuverability and speed of the Su-35 make it an unmatched dogfighter. In close range, the Su-35 would be capable of gunning down an F-22 or F-15.

However, it’s unclear how it would get to a short-range fight with the stealth US fighters like F-35, which can fire BVR without being detected.

Russia Air Force vs. USAF: Final Verdict 

Though the military budget of the US is unmatched by that of Russia, the Soviet Union still commands power in the air force arena. It is clear to note that the technology installed in USAF aircraft is superior to that of Russia. However, Russia focuses on quantity over quality.

If air warfare was to break out between these two nations, Russia might emerge the winner since they have more cheap aircraft to spare than the US. However, please don’t take my word for it; US fighters’ advanced technology and stealth capability make it very hard for enemy aircraft to locate and fire at them.

Which is the coolest modern military aircraft?

The Northrop Grumman X-47B is one of the coolest military aircraft of the 21st century. It is an experimental strike and surveillance aircraft designed to perform one of the most difficult feats in aviation. This includes for instance landing and taking off from a carrier deck at sea.

But that too without a pilot. The size of X-47B is similar to a modern piloted fighter for example General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The Northrop Grumman X-47B is an active aircraft since February 2011, when it was first tested. The X-47B travels at just below the speed of sound.

It has an unrefueled endurance of more than six hours and an unrefueled range of over 3,890 km. With the Pentagon’s strategic policy shift to the Asia-Pacific region, Navy leaders want to ensure that aircraft carriers will be able to project power and penetrate an enemy’s airspace on the other side of the globe.

A fighter without a human pilot could be part of the solution.

With aerial refueling, the X-47B could remain on patrol at ranges well beyond 5,500 km. It can stay aloft for 50 to 100 hours — five to 10 times longer than a manned aircraft. This extended reach and ability to stay within range of its target, either for reconnaissance or attack, would allow a dispersed U.S. aircraft carrier force to apply combat power over an enormous area.

Why helicopters are more difficult to fly than airplanes?

A helicopter is quite a lot more difficult to fly than airplanes or aero planes/ airplanes. People make all these impossible analogies, when really it’s quite simple. An airplane is like a car. You steer it where you want it to go. A helicopter is like a motorcycle. You’re part of the machine, it’s part of you, and you just do what you need to do.

The hard part is training your ‘muscle memory’ to make that true, over the whole flight envelope. That takes more time than it does for an airplane, and is more important

The Difference in Flying

Airplanes are busy during the takeoff, departure, arrival, approach, and landing phases. During the cruise phase of flight, the autopilot makes things very easy. Airline pilots will often take that time to handle paperwork related to the flight, or perhaps review the procedures expected at the arrival airport. There are other things that you may have heard pilots doing up front, like reading the paper or books.

Flying a helicopter is a different type of flying. Whereas an airplane built with stability as an inherent property, helicopters are always unstable. Let go of the controls of a helicopter and see how long it takes before you are in an unusual attitude. It won’t be long. You must fly a helicopter from the moment you crank the engines until the moment the blades stop turning.

Some helicopters have autopilots, but most require the pilot to have his/her hands on the controls at all times. Additionally, most military helicopter pilots fly the terrain-flight mode, conforming their altitude to the terrain. This requires a very heightened state of awareness, which is very fatiguing.

All that being said, aside from aerobatics and thermodynamics, flying helicopters is more fun. You are constantly manipulating the controls, so you always feel like you’re flying the aircraft.

There is an old aviation joke that state a helicopter is a bunch of nuts and bolts flying in formation that are trying to kill you.

The LMXT : World’s First Fully Automatic Strategic Tanker

Lockheed Martin has developed a strategic tanker for US Air Force known as the LMXT. It is made in America by Americans for Americans.

The LMXT is delivered in response to the KC-Y program of the United States Air Force. KC-Y program of the US Air Force was launched on 16th June, 2021 which requires development in aerial refueling for US Air Force once the deliveries of the Boeing Pegasus complete at the decade’s end.

The International Advanced Research Centre (ARCI) has discovered a new bi-functional metal-based electrocatalyst that can not only increase the efficiency of metal-air batteries but is also believed that it will also marginalize the cost.

ARCI has developed less expensive catalysts by positioning the metal ions in the sulfur-doped carbon framework via polymer carbonization known as SPEEK which stands for Sulphonated Polyether Ether Ketone.

In this process, the metal ions are positioned uniformly which makes low loading of transition metal. Hence, due to this low loading, the goal of cost-effectiveness is fulfilled. In the newly discovered catalysts, voltage polarization is also marginalized which makes the battery more efficient.

Under this policy, the subsidy will be provided for the buyers of 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers only. The plan is to subsidize a total of 200,000 vehicles which includes 20,000 four-wheeler EVs, 70,000 three-wheeler EVs and 110,000 two-wheeler EVs.

The subsidy of Rs 10,000/Kwh of battery capacity will be given by Gujarat which is the highest in all the states of India. However, the total incentive for two-wheelers is capped at Rs 20,000. For three-wheelers and four-wheelers the subsidy amount is capped at Rs 50,000 and Rs 150,000 respectively.

The procedures are kept quite simple to get subsidies. One can get the amount directly from the state department of transport once the vehicle documents are authenticated.

Other Criteria

One more criterion is there for the ex-showroom price of the vehicle. If the two-wheeler ex-showroom price exceeds Rs 150,000 then the buyer is not eligible for the subsidy. Similarly for three-wheelers and four-wheelers the maximum ex-showroom price is Rs 500,000 and Rs 1.5 million. Please note that this policy is not only applicable on commercial vehicle buyers but also on private cars, bike buyers etc.
