Review : Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

The new 7-seater petrol version replaces the previous 5-seat diesel version Tiguan.

Final Verdict : A more practical SUV than the standard Tiguan with a lot more power and better performance but the third row is very confined. 3.5 out of 5

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Although extremely competent and very likeable, the Volkswagen Tiguan never really set the sales charts on fire. At almost Rs. 40 lakh on-road, it was expensive, especially considering its near-compact-SUV size. In addition, the 143HP diesel engine made only sufficient power, and there was no third row of seats either. Sure, there were many premium bits worthy of its price tag, and it was more than pleasant to drive, but when it came to the competition in its class, it had its work cut out for it.

Now, in an effort to tackle this, Volkswagen has replaced the Tiguan with the Tiguan Allspace. A longer car with a third row of seats, the Allspace is just as premium on the inside and is fitted with a strong, 190HP petrol motor.

With its fresh nose and new details, the Tiguan Allspace looks attractive from the front. however, despite having a third row and being larger than the Tiguan, the Allspace doesn’t quite have the stance of an SuV. Something like a Honda Cr-V is just so much more convincing. that said, you get leD headlights and tail-lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels on the outside. the interior has plenty of leather and soft-touch plastics that feel expensive. then there is the instrument cluster which (like on most modern luxury SuVs) is fully digital; and you also get an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple and Android connectivity. Seating comfort is good too, with electrically adjustable seats, but let’s talk about the third row of the Allspace. Access, for one, is difficult; you need to tumble and flip the middle row seat, and then almost curl yourself up into a ball to get inside, and once you are settled in there’s actually very little space here.

This space is just about enough for children, and that too for short drives as it is cramped and uncomfortable here. the middle row can be moved ahead; and with it, the backrest too. even then, you can never really be comfortable in the back with all three rows occupied.

The Allspace gets VW’s 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol BS6 engine, which makes a decent 190hp. Performance is impressive, the Allspace clocking a time of 8.8sec in the 0-100kph sprint. the 7-speed DSG gearbox is a bit jerky at low revs but is also quick and responsive, and makes the driving experience enjoyable. It doesn’t have the punch of the diesel in the mid range and it takes its time to get going; but once the power comes in past 2,500rpm, delivery is very strong and the engine pulls hard all the way to the 6,500rpm redline. And if you stay on the throttle, the strong performance carries on to the next gear too.

New Discovery Sport 7 Seat Layout

Handling isn’t exactly exciting, though, and due to the stretched wheelbase and added length, agility is also not the same as on the regular Tiguan. ride comfort is decent. The Tiguan Allspace is in its comfort zone on highways, offering impressive stability at speeds, but it is firm in the city, especially over sharp bumps, where you tend to bounce around quite a lot.

The Tiguan Allspace then isn’t the perfect 7-seater. however, if you want a good and effortless highway cruiser with a solid build and a premium cabin, and you’re open to the idea of using the third row for children only or just as added boot space, this SUV might just fit the bill. Priced at Rs 33.12 lakh, it is a good Rs 2 lakh costlier than the standard Tiguan, but remember – you will be buying some exclusivity too, as the Allspace will be sold in limited numbers. So if you think you would want one, hurry up, take a test drive and decide.

Review : Land Rover Discovery Sport, 2021

The Land Rover Discovery Sport gets a mid-life facelift and the changes are
more than just skin-deep!

Final Verdict : More comfortable, refined and luxurious now; drives better too. 4 out of 5

When We usually talk about a facelift, it involves a set of new bumpers, new headlights and tail-lights, and maybe a minor update in the engine bay. The 2020 Discovery Sport Facelift though, is different, and the updates are more than just skin-deep.

At first glance, the updates do seem purely visual. The Discovery sport facelift now gets design elements seen on larger land Rovers, especially around the front. It looks smoother but more aggressive, and there’s more girth to it. The s variant here is the entry-level model and it gets a pronounced silver skid plate on the lower half. The honeycomb- design grille is painted in a similar shade of silver, and the headlights too are akin to the ones on the bigger land Rovers – they are sharper, with new LED daytime running lights offered as standard across variants. Changes along the side and back include new wheels and an updated rear bumper, along with a set of new LED Tail-Lights with detailed lighting elements.

On the inside, the changes are far more obvious. For instance, the rotary knob gear selector has been replaced by a more traditional lever. you also get a nicer looking dashboard with open-pore wood inserts, a large horizontally oriented 10-inch touchscreen that has a new user interface, and a gloss black center console that houses the climate control and drive mode functions. While the top-spec variant gets a fully digital instrument cluster, the base s variant here gets a part-digital, part-analogue cluster that looks like a bit of an afterthought at first, but is actually rather well implemented. This variant also misses out on the ‘Clearsight’ rear-view camera and mirror screen package, but land Rover has equipped it with features like the massive panoramic sunroof (that doesn’t open) and the powered tailgate that can be operated using just a button.

One of the main drawbacks of the Land Rover Discovery Sport has been its 7-seat layout, and that continues on the updated model too. On the second row, there is slightly less under- thigh support and the seat is a bit firm. The third row is best reserved for children or for very short trips; there just isn’t enough space for a fully grown adult to spend any amount of time.

New Discovery Sport 7 Seat Layout

As mentioned, the changes aren’t just skin-deep. land Rover has updated the Discovery Sport with a set of BS6-compliant petrol and diesel 2.0-litre motors. The one we have here is the D180 diesel unit that makes 180HP. What you notice immediately is that overall noise levels on the updated engine is significantly lower. There is still a hint of gruffness and it can’t quite match the level of refinement seen on German cars, but it isn’t far off the mark. The engine is mated to a 9-speed torque converter that is now more responsive than before – both, in the ‘D’ or Drive mode, and in ‘S’ or sport mode. If you have a light right leg, the Discovery sport will be happy to cruise around in the 9th gear at speeds as low as 80kph.

However, that said, when you do pin the throttle down, power delivery start to taper off rather quickly. Top-end performance is a bit disappointing here.

Another real big update with the facelift is the introduction of a brand-new platform. Called the Premium Transverse architecture, it’s the same one that underpins the new Range Rover Evoque. and a new platform usually means a stiffer floor, better safety, and improved ride and handling.

If you have spent a bit of time behind the wheel of the pre-facelift Discovery sport, the difference is stark! The steering is responsive, although a bit on the heavier side. Ride quality, especially over really bad and broken roads, is excellent, and while the Disco sport does have a noticeable amount of body roll while changing lanes, it drives and handles with plenty of confidence.

The updates certainly show a remarkable improvement over the pre-facelift Discovery sport. The SUV now looks neater and cleaner, with a more aggressive and contemporary look. The cabin is more luxurious and packed with tech (especially on the R-Dynamic variant), it’s smoother and more refined, it rides and drives better, and, of course, because it is a 4×4 and a land Rover, you can expect it to be a lot more competent off-road too. yes, the third row isn’t very useful, a bit more performance would have been nice, and priced from Rs. 57.06- 60.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it isn’t better value either. still, with the update, the Discovery sport is clearly back in the game. We’d, however, choose the petrol P250 with 245hp, as it would be a bit nicer to drive.

Review : Volvo C40 Recharge 2021

Volvo have stated that they will have an all-electric line-up by the year 2030. They have also said that combustion engines will not be a part of their line-up even in hybrid form. While electric cars may seem to be the way of the future, that certainly is not all clouded by doubt. In fact, while electric motors and their instant response as well as minimal mechanical or moving parts are appreciated and are rather future-proof, it is the means of supply that beg the question, “What Next?”. Surely, batteries are among the least sustainable means of energy delivery and, while manufacturers strive to reclaim and reuse cobalt and other elements, there is, doubtless, a need for more efficient and far more sustainable means of energy storage. Nevertheless, electrics look like they’re here to stay.

Volvo C40 Recharge Twin

The new C40 Recharge Twin, then, marks the return of the “C” range of models for Volvo, the last of which were the C30 hatchback and C70 convertible which went into the sunset at the turn of the last decade. the new C40 is styled akin to the German sports activity coupé models but is not quite as large. Based on the modular architecture, at 4,431 millimetres long, the C40 sits with the XC40 — which is six mm shorter, 13 mm wider, and a full 70 mm taller — on the same 2,702-mm wheelbase. While the sloping roof gives it a more hatchback-esque design, Volvo says the C40 Recharge still offers a raised seating position. the hardware it packs is also similar, with two electric motors, one 150-kW motor each at the front and rear axle, good for a total of 408 hp and 660 Nm with electric all-wheel- drive functionality. the 78-kWh battery pack powers the motors and helps propel the 2,185-kg C40 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 180 km/h. The new SUV will be offered with a range of unique interior trim colors and lines and will be Volvo’s first completely leather-free model. It also features Volvo’s new Android-based touchscreen infotainment system, which was jointly developed with Google, and will be offered with unlimited data usage to enable over-the-air updates. That system, which was first used in the XC40 Recharge, offers a significant step forward over its previous infotainment system.

C40’s Android Based Infotainment System

The C40 is the latest move as the company seeks transition towards becoming a fully electric car-maker. That move itself is part of its ambitious climate plan that seeks to consistently reduce the lifecycle carbon footprint per car through viable action. the decision builds on the expectation that there will be a rapid expansion of accessible charging infrastructure that will accelerate acceptance of fully electric cars. The move towards full electrification also comes together with an increased focus on online sales and more complete, attractive, and transparent offers for buyers. All fully electric models will be available online only.

In the years to come, Volvo will roll out more electric car models. By as early as 2025, they aim for half their global sales to consist of fully electric cars, the rest being hybrid. By 2030, every car sold should be fully electric. Håkan Samuelsson, Chief executive Officer, Volvo Cars, said, ‘To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future — electric and online. We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment.’

The Swedish carmaker is set to launch the all-electric XC40 Recharge in India in the coming months. Volvo has previously stated that it’s keen on assembling the electric XC40 in India, which could result in a relatively competitive price. From 2022, Volvo aims to have only petrol and battery electric models in India.

As things stand Volvo offers a total of five models in our market – the XC40, XC60, XC90 SUVs along with the S90 and recently launched S60 Sedan.
